Abstract
Infectious diseases remain a major health concern worldwide, and rapid differentiation between bacterial and viral infections is essential for appropriate clinical management. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of complete blood count (CBC) parameters in distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections. Blood samples were collected from patients presenting with symptoms of infection, and CBC analysis was performed using an automated hematology analyzer. The study focused on evaluating several hematological parameters, including total white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, hemoglobin level, and platelet count. The results showed significant differences in white blood cell patterns between bacterial and viral infections. Patients with bacterial infections demonstrated elevated total WBC counts with increased neutrophil levels, whereas patients with viral infections showed relatively higher lymphocyte counts. Hemoglobin and platelet levels did not show significant variations between the two groups in most cases. These findings indicate that CBC parameters, particularly WBC differential counts, can serve as useful preliminary indicators in distinguishing bacterial from viral infections. Therefore, CBC remains a simple, rapid, and cost-effective laboratory test that can support early clinical decision-making when combined with clinical evaluation and other diagnostic method
